Dr. Charles Felz


Dr. Felz grew up in Canon City, Colorado where he knew from a very early age he wanted to be a Veterinarian. At age 14, he started working weekends and after school, cleaning kennels at a vet hospital in his home town, and his love of animals and medicine really began to flourish. He completed his pre-veterinary studies at Colorado State University before receiving his DVM degree from Ross University in 2008.

After graduation Dr. Felz practiced at a busy mixed animal practice in Colorado for one year. He was then selected to complete a very rigorous 1 year small animal internship at Iowa State University followed by residency training in anesthesia and pain management at ISU. While working and teaching at Iowa State, Dr. Felz moonlighted at a busy emergency practice in Des Moines. During his time at ISU, Dr. Felz fell in love with Ames and decided to open Somerset Veterinary Hospital in 2011. Dr. Felz has special interests in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, pain management and emergency/critical care medicine.

Dr. Felz has a wife named Marin, who is an Edward Jones financial advisor, and two beautiful children, Avery and Landon. He also has two dogs, Tucker and Cassie, and a cat named Pretty.

In his spare time Dr. Felz loves to spend as much time with his family as possible and enjoys camping, hiking, sports, and getting involved in the Ames community.

Dr. Rivers


Dr. Rivers grew upon on a small family farm in northeast Iowa giving her an early insight for her love of animals and veterinary medicine. She attended Iowa State University for undergraduate studies, during which time she also worked at a feline specialty clinic as a veterinary assistant and a laboratory assistant in the Department of Pathology at the veterinary school. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, and went on to graduate with her DVM from Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Rivers’ husband, Brandon, is active in leadership as a nurse floor manager at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Together they have one dog, Sixxer, and two cats, Asher and Big Smoke; all of which are spoiled at home. Dr. Rivers enjoys being outdoors, gardening, and cooking at home. She also is an avid sports fanatic, participating in a Fantasy Football League each year and attending many Cyclone sporting events.
